Birthday Surprise treasure hunt illustration

Find a hunt that fits.

One invitation, a shared birthday adventure

Use the birthday child’s first name or a team nickname as the explorer name. Set the date, time, location and RSVP details on the invitation. The same invitation can be sent to everyone; adding names for certificates does not replace the birthday child’s name on it.

Choose a theme the birthday child enjoys

Birthday Surprise is one starting point. You can also use a pirate, space or another illustrated world, then edit the title and message to match your celebration. The theme supplies the atmosphere; your chosen hiding places supply the real route.

Let everyone help solve the trail

For one group, give the first card to the children and let them take turns reading, offering ideas and looking for the next stop. Agree in advance that found cards stay with the group. If you want separate teams with separate routes, create a separate hunt for each team and clearly label the printed sets.

Finish with a certificate for every child

In Pages, enter one first name per line to generate individual certificates. All certificates use the message from Design. You can also include a blank certificate for a last-minute guest. These names label the printed certificates; they do not create child accounts.

Prepare around the rest of the party

Choose a start time that leaves room for food and other activities. Keep the route away from fragile decorations and busy food-preparation areas. Have an adult check the hiding order, hold the hints and help the children celebrate together at the final destination.

A REAL PRINTABLE TRAIL EXAMPLE

Six clues, one connected adventure.

Fictional explorer: Alex · Ages 7–9 · Replace the sample places with ones you have.

  1. Clue 1

Birthday explorers, let the celebration begin! Jackets hang here after a chilly day. Look by their hook to find your way.

  2. Clue 2

The party team has found another message. My shelves hold stories side by side. Among their spines, a clue can hide.

  3. Clue 3

A secret celebration clue is waiting. Decode the hiding place. A=1, B=2, C=3, up to Z=26: 19-15-6-1

  4. Clue 4

Keep the birthday adventure moving! Plates gather here when meals begin. Look underneath to find your next win.

  5. Clue 5

Your special surprise is getting closer. When play is done, toys come to stay. Find their basket to continue your day.

  6. Clue 6

The final birthday message leads to your surprise! I cradle your head when day turns to night. Look underneath me for your next delight.

The answer to each clue tells you where to put the next card. Keep this guide with the grown-up.

  1. Hand card 1 to the explorers.
  2. Hide card 2 at Coat hook — the answer to clue 1.
  3. Hide card 3 at Bookshelf — the answer to clue 2.
  4. Hide card 4 at Sofa — the answer to clue 3.
  5. Hide card 5 at Dining table — the answer to clue 4.
  6. Hide card 6 at Toy basket — the answer to clue 5.
  7. Put the treasure at Pillow — the answer to clue 6.

More than six cards.

An invitation to begin

Add the explorer or team name, date, time, location and RSVP details. One invitation introduces the shared adventure.

A guide for the grown-up

Keep the hiding order and answers private. Optional hints help you offer a nudge without immediately giving away the destination.

A certificate to celebrate

Use the explorer name, or add a list of names in Pages for individual certificates. The invitation name stays unchanged.

Planning questions

Does every child need a separate clue kit?

Not if they play together as one group. You can print extra copies if useful, but one shared trail can lead the group to the finish.

Can each guest have a named invitation?

The current kit has one shared invitation using the explorer or team name. Individual names can be added separately for certificates.

Is the treasure included?

No physical items are supplied. Choose your own reward, such as a note, a small gift or a shared party treat.
